Robert Fripp – “Exposures” (25xCD+3xDVD+4xBlu-ray Panegyric/DGM, 2022)

Pandemics, wars, inflation, government crises, cancel culture: today's world offers few certainties, save for the periodic appointment with Fripp's pachydermic box sets. Undeterred by the now evident and unstoppable crisis of the record market (assuming there still is one), Robert Fripp stays true to his promise to induce his fans to burn through their savings, releasing, almost on a yearly basis, expanded, remixed and remastered editions of his heroic exploits with or without King Crimson.

After “In The Court Of The Crimson King” (5xCD+1DVD, 2009), “Lark's Tongues In Aspic” (13xCD+1xDVD+1xBlu-ray, 2012), “The Road To Red” (21xCD+1xDVD+2xBlu-Ray, 2013), “Starless” (23xCD+2xDVD+2xBlu-ray, 2014), “Thrak” (12xCD+2xDVD+2xBlu-ray, 2015), “On (And Off) The Road” (11xCD+5xDVD+3xBlu-ray, 2016), “Sailor's Tales” (21xCD+2xDVD+4xBlu-ray, 2017), “The Complete 1969 Recordings” (20xCD+2xDVD+4xBlu-ray, 2020) and a plethora of remastered reissues of individual albums and live recordings, the ninth, meticulously in-depth box set of the series has finally arrived, devoted for the most part to his fabled experimental guitar solipsisms, otherwise known as “Frippertronics”.

After King Crimson disbanded in 1974, Fripp withdrew from the spotlight; a few years later he moved to New York to launch his solo career and, at the same time, become the sought-after collaborator of a considerable number of artists, among whom it's worth mentioning David Bowie (who, together with Brian Eno, in 1977 would request his guitar on “Heroes”), Daryl Hall (“Sacred Songs”, produced by Fripp, was recorded in 1977 and released in 1980), Peter Gabriel (“Peter Gabriel”, also known as “II”, again produced by Fripp and released in 1978) and The Roches & Blondie.

His debut solo album was titled “Exposure” (1979), followed by “God Save The Queen/Under Heavy Manners” (1980) and “Let The Power Fall” (1981). In 1981 he formed “League Of Gentlemen”, a sort of dance/new wave project that, that same year, would lead him to reform King Crimson. All this, and much more, is contained in the over 100 (o-n-e h-u-n-d-r-e-d!) hours of music featured in the “Exposures” box set, released by Panegyric/DGM at the end of May 2022, in the form of no fewer than thirty-two discs split across twenty-five CDs, three audio DVDs and four audio Blu-rays.

Trusty Steven Wilson is responsible for two new, different mixes of “Exposure”, as well as the mixing of the studio versions of “Under Heavy Manners”, “The League Of Gentlemen” and numerous unreleased tracks, presented in Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD 5.1 Surround and high-resolution 24/96 stereo audio on Blu-ray.

David Singleton, meanwhile, handled the mixes of “God Save The Queen”, “Let The Power Fall” and the “Frippertronics” album “Washington Square Church”, which appear in DTS-HD Surround (Quad/4.1) and in stereo ranging from 24/48 (WSC), 24/96 (GSTQ) to 24/192 (LTPF) on Blu-ray discs 1 and 4.

The three DVDs contain the main albums in 5.1, Quad and high-resolution stereo, while the 25 CDs feature material including the very earliest loops and all the albums in both Steven Wilson's and David Singleton's mixes, plus the original mixes newly remastered and a considerable amount of unreleased studio and live material.

Two of the Blu-rays contain more than 68 hours of fully restored “Frippertronics” and loops, most of which are previously unreleased or unheard since they were performed live between 1977 and 1983.

In addition to the audio material, the box set – in 12” format – includes a 48-page book featuring a long and exhaustive index of contents, a considerable amount of unpublished photos, two engaging, in-depth essays by Sid Smith and Al Okada, as well as several Fripp-esque interpolations from the era. Rounding it all out are reproductions of posters, flyers, concert tickets, promotional photos, press releases, a couple of scores, including that of “Breathless” (it's in 7/8, ed.), and even a business card belonging to His Majesty Robert Fripp himself. All of this, at the time of writing, sold by Amazon at the rather unattractive price of €193.56.
