Lo Stato Sociale

Locanda Atlantide, Rome

Lo Stato Sociale have blown up, and last night I understood it once and for all. We were chatting with Alberto Guidetti before the show: 1000 copies pressed, practically all sold out in a month. And I thought to myself, sure, okay, loads of gigs, airplay on Radio Deejay, all nice things. But deep down they were still a niche band.

Turns out no, because the sheer number of people I saw at Locanda Atlantide (the queue, outside!) left me stunned. And because, fundamentally, they have one of the most powerful live shows around right now.

They open with "Abbiamo vinto la guerra", drum machine riding high as ever, deep basslines and little theatrical skits thrown together on the spot. And you realize people were singing the album back word for word - behind me three girls were singing the praises of just how hot the singer is. That's when it hit me. "Mi sono rotto il cazzo" and I hear the friend next to her, at the line "mi sono rotto il cazzo della critica musicale, non siete Lester Bangs", pinch me.

These guys have a real charge to them, you can see it on stage. They jump around, they smile, they drink. "Sono così indie" with special guest one Leo, six or seven years old, who grabs a microphone bigger than himself and starts singing like a maniac, girls discovering they're mothers in three seconds flat and "oh how cute". Little hearts everywhere.

"Amore ai tempi dell'Ikea", "Ladro di cuori col bruco", "Pop" fly by in a terrifying triptych complete with pogo pit, and before the closer ("Cromosomi") a few more standout moments:

1. Stage diving with no crowd, straight onto the floor

2. "Quello che le donne dicono" lip-synced with a spot-on choreography right in the crowd, not even Garrison on Amici di Maria De Filippi could pull that off

3. Various bits of theatre of the absurd.

You're not I Cani, you're actual dogs.

Huge.
