Born on September 30, 1986 in Bournemouth, England, Daniel Avery is one of the most innovative and prolific English electronic music producers of the 2010s and 2020s.
Initially a fan of rock music, particularly stoner and shoegaze, he became a regular at the "Project Mayhem" dance night, until he was invited to get behind the decks by the night's organizer. Avery moved to London in 2007, and a couple of years later began dabbling in his first productions and DJing under the name Stopmakingme, performing regularly at Fabric. During this period, Avery worked at the Pure Groove record shop in Smithfield Market, where he met some of his future collaborators, such as Kelly Lee Owens and James Greenwood. Kelly Lee Owens would later contribute to Avery's debut album, "Drone Logic", while Avery would go on to produce Owens's first EP, "Oleic". In 2011, Pure Groove closed its doors, and Avery decided to use his own name for his subsequent releases.
In 2012, after contributing to the "Fabriclive" series, Avery released the mixtape "Divided Love", limited to 100 copies distributed exclusively on cassette, with one side devoted to a club mix and the other to more ambient, chill-out tracks. But his actual debut album arrived on October 4, 2013: "Drone Logic", followed three years later by a mixtape released for the "DJ-Kicks" series.
In January 2018 he released the EP "Slow Fade", followed by his second album, "Song for Alpha". His collaboration with Alessandro Cortini yielded "Illusion of Time" in 2020. In 2019, Avery took over from the legendary Mary Anne Hobbs as host of the BBC Radio 6 Music show 6 Music Recommends. In 2020 he released the single "Lone Swordsman", a tribute to Andrew Weatherall, who had died in February of that same year, with proceeds from the single's Bandcamp sales going to Amnesty International. "Love + Light" in 2020 and "Together in Static" in 2021 paved the way for his most acclaimed album, "Ultra Truth", released in November 2022. The record features the voices of Kelly Lee Owens, Jonnie Standish of HTRK, HAAi, Marie Davidson and SHERELLE.
In May 2025 came a four-track EP released under the name Demise of Love, a project featuring Avery, Ghost Culture and Working Men's Club, preceded by the single "Strange Little Consequence". Meanwhile, his remix of the Cure song "Drone:Nodrone", taken from "Songs Of A Lost World", was included on the compilation "Mixes Of A Lost World". On October 31 of that same year came "Tremor", marking a shift toward more rock-oriented directions.
