Julien Baker has recently announced an EP containing unreleased songs dating back to the recording sessions for the splendid “Little Oblivions”, our album of the month back in March 2021. What better occasion, then, to put together a playlist made entirely of singles, outtakes, bonus tracks, remixes and other rarities from the new wave of songwriting? And although we already dedicated a “monographic” playlist to the solo careers of boygenius at the close of 2021 (here), we couldn't leave out the recent singles by Phoebe Bridgers, who bewitched Carroponte on July 5th with a short but intense show, and by Lucy Dacus, who revisits one of the most heart-wrenching songs in her catalogue on “Thumbs Again”.
Twenty-two tracks spanning folk, indie-rock, indie-pop, chamber-pop and, why not, even the vintage pop of the new Lorde. A vintage sound also pursued by Margo Price on “You Don’t Own Me”, released on the deluxe edition of her fine third album “That’s How Rumors Get Started”, and by Natalie Bergman on “Keep Those Teardrops From Falling”. It's precisely these expanded reissues of previously released albums that give us a cover of the country ballad “Light Of A Clear Blue Morning” performed by Waxahatchee, a tribute from Sun June to Tom Petty, and the gorgeous, moving acoustic reworkings of some of the best songs from the recent record by Villagers. And it's not just Conor O’Brien re-recording his own songs: there's also Fenne Lily with her delicate “I, Nietzsche”, a Madi Diaz track featuring Courtney Marie Andrews, and a Faye Webster who drapes her wistful songwriting in a brand-new orchestral guise.
Some of these may be “minor” tracks, but they can still serve as a gateway into the music of artists you may not know, or to whom, for one reason or another, you've never devoted the time they deserved. But, more than anything else, these are 22 songs that are truly worth listening to. Perhaps on a peaceful summer evening, when the suffocating heat finally starts to grant us a little respite, and when, out in the countryside, the chirping of crickets and the glow of fireflies join in the celebration.
