VINTAGE VIOLENCE - A sentimento

Having crossed the finish line of twenty years of activity - no easy feat in these times of music market crisis - Rocco Arienti (guitars), Nicolò Caldirola (vocals), Roberto Galli (bass) and Beniamino Cefalù (drums) carry on with their journey, gathering on the Ep "A sentimento" four tracks doled out sparingly over the past few months, plus the previously unreleased "Guaribili ottimisti". Alt-rock steeped in punk attitude, proudly independent, always paying close attention to the lyrics, often centred on a bitter political and social critique and on the tangled interpersonal relationships of the social-media age. Music as a tool for protest, a blunt account of the small and large struggles we're all bound to face every day.

It's precisely on "Guaribili ottimisti" that you might recognise guitars played in Strokes mode, a track that - by the band's own admission - musically represents an evolution toward a more minimal, less cerebral dimension, one built to shine live, where the line-up is bolstered by Franco Cassinelli on second guitar.

The tight rhythms remain ("Sono un casino"), but the arrangements of some tracks (such as the acoustic section that opens the closing "Il nuovo mare") reveal how the quartet is gradually shifting toward more "grown-up", singer-songwriter-leaning solutions, while still preserving an unmistakably rock backbone. Seen in this light, "A sentimento" comes across as a summary of the last two years in the life of Vintage Violence, a settling of accounts before tackling the next artistic chapter.
