MENOMALE - Torneranno tutti gli animali

2026 (Totally imported)
indie pop, songwriter

The statement that gives the new EP by thank goodness its title is as endearing as it is revealing of a deeper outlook. Then again, from a musician – born Leonardo Tosti – who decided to call himself that, pretty much anything is possible.
Tosti began his career working as a producer for other artists, including Ngawa and Maggio, before releasing the EP “Ciao, come stai?” in 2020, entirely self-produced and a trailblazer for a disenchanted songwriting style, steeped in that “indie” intimism sometimes needed to set oneself apart for a moment from the banality of the countless cookie-cutter Italian productions now flooding the “market” as if there were no tomorrow.

“Oggi sono in giro intorno a Giove”, sings thank goodness in “Giove”, delivering an airy ballad written to candidly tell the story of two bodies stubbornly orbiting one another. A delightful metaphor once again, for a relationship that changes direction, at times bringing misunderstandings but also unprecedented new paths to save itself and find its way back together.
Between acoustic caresses and analogue arrangements, across the five songs on “Torneranno tutti gli animali” thank goodness pursues, perhaps unconsciously, a path that could also be seen as the ideal meeting point between the eternal-jester bewilderment of Lucio Corsi and the gentle distortions of an Italian indie band that made the history of the whole scene, namely Valentina Dorme.

"Siamo gomme sotto le scarpe di questo cielo immenso", thank goodness then sings in "La parola chiave", another romantic ballad in which disillusionment tussles with an innate urge to move forward, looking back only to poke a bit of fun at itself.
Indeed, it's a certain self-irony, increasingly rare these days, that animates Leonardo Tosti's songwriting, for an EP of genuine indie-pop singer-songwriter material, to be listened to and listened to again without chasing impossible alchemies, except, partly, for the title track, which ends up being the most playful moment of the bunch, both thematically and sonically, with the acoustic guitar giving way to restless tempo changes that add some spice, and in the background those well-placed harmonic diversions that never hurt.

A solid second effort, then. Awaiting the first LP.
