Station Model Violence are an Australian band formed in Sydney in 2024 around Daniel Stewart (already frontman of Total Control) and other musicians from the local DIY scene (Den, R.M.F.C., Slug Guts, Gaud). We can consider them something of a supergroup, given the notable background in the Australian indie and post-punk scene of all five members (three guitars, bass and drums). Their debut album follows that same path, offering a synthesis of post-punk and art rock, psychedelic touches and noisy rawness. It's an album that moves through grey, decaying, arid urban landscapes, where the compromised future has already arrived and all that's left is anger and resignation, but also an ability to adapt and a will to keep going, within this context
The album's sound is built in layers: at the base there's bass and distorted guitars, piling up to create a constant rumbling backdrop; on top of this foundation come the subsequent layers, rising up to the guitar strumming, clearly audible, which balances out the intrinsic harshness. Stewart's voice is deep and backed by austere, almost martial choruses, which add a sense of solemnity to the picture.
This isn't a record that tries to please and coddle the listener; quite the opposite, it's an album that wants to select its own audience, challenging it with long intros, intersecting distortions, rhythmic repetitions that hammer at your eardrums. One example is "Leisure", a sort of Joy Division shard with huge guitars piled on top; or the galloping "Heat", clocking in at over 8 minutes. But also the opening track, "Learn To Hate", which immediately makes clear to the listener that "Station Model Violence" won't give them a moment's rest.
The album has been very well received by critics, who have acknowledged the band's ability to express an original voice within a genre that has been extremely reworked and explored, especially in recent years, as well as their skill in moving between and blending different influences without being swallowed up by any of them.
