NEOPRIMITIVI - Il sangue è pronto

It's clear that Neoprimitivi are carving out a path entirely their own, a truly personal journey, one that's also rather rich in potential pitfalls, but which for that very reason is all the more compelling. They couldn't care less about categorization or radio play: their style is fairly hard to pin down, and their debut a year ago came in the form of "Sul globo d'argento", a single track running twenty-one minutes long. When they play live, if they really have to pick a cover, they go all in on "Sister Ray" by Velvet Underground, just to make clear to the world their will to experiment without boundaries. After "Orgia mistero", last year's album which met with broad critical consensus (uniformly positive), the second record arrives out of nowhere, with no warning whatsoever, and it's a project that once again stands out for its rather unique traits, especially for these times.

"Il sangue è pronto" is a single track, thirty-eight minutes and twenty-six seconds long. Unless you fancy jumping around it in some brain-scrambling shuffle, if you want to stream it you'll have to swallow it whole in one sitting. A listen that necessarily demands attention, immersion, dedication. A pagan rite, a psychedelic sabbath rich with sinuous crescendos, daring surges and placid moments of calm, within which lounge-jazz-funk digressions, Lynchian incursions, mystical oases, tribal ceremonies, tributes to Talking Heads, world-music inclusions, dub rarefactions and esoteric spoken word all follow one another in constant succession. A single long track, structured like a progressive rock suite, split into six movements each with its own title: in their own way these are fully-fledged songs, yet ones that can't be heard apart from everything surrounding them. It's impossible to slot just one of them into a playlist: all or nothing, in defiance of the rules of the music business in the new millennium.

The six musicians certainly aren't short on nerve, yet they manage to create a listen that's utterly intriguing and engaging, with the thirty-eight-plus minutes ultimately flying by, winning the listener over through the sheer amount of things happening within them. The idea behind the album was refined following the live scoring of the film "Riti, magie nere e segrete orge nel Trecento", a cult horror/erotic film from the Seventies directed by Renato Polselli, performed during one of the dates of the monthly residency the Roman collective held throughout 2025 at Trenta Formiche in Rome (heads up: starting next February 19th it will once again become a regular fixture).

During the writing and recording of the album, the initial ideas gradually morphed into something else, expanding while still retaining a certain cinematic progression. Composed, played and recorded together with Giacomo Fiorenza, and produced by Flavio Gonnellini, "Il sangue è pronto" also features Gaia Banfi on backing vocals and Eugenio Petrarca (Acrartep) on drones and synth.
