NAYT - Io individuo

2026 (Columbia)
conscious hip-hop, pop-rap

Pop music of the last thirty years is a torture

Not even Calcutta could save it

The fear was that Nayt would come out of it crushed by Sanremo: a difficult stage, not exactly kind to rappers and even less welcoming to those who favor a more measured, emotional-without-becoming-overwrought language. Instead, "Prima che" introduced Nayt's thoughtful, intimate way of rhyming to Italy's wider music audience, earning an excellent sixth-place finish. The song, a conscious track exploring relationships and emotions, now appears on "Io individuo", the tenth studio album of a career that began in far more hardcore territory - one we've already covered on the occasion of "Habitat" (2023) and "Lettera Q" (2024).

A reflection on his own identity guides the thirteen tracks in the running order, built like a hypothetical loop: the closing track is an interlude that ideally leads back to the start of the album, suggesting how important rethinking and re-listening are for the rapper from Molise.

The opening salvo of aggressive rhymes on "Scrivendo", with its melancholy chorus, is a way of dodging a homogenizing kind of success that, at this point in his career, sounds more like a risk than an opportunity. This sharper-edged style returns on "Ci nasci, ci muori", another critique of society and the music industry, with a few self-referential platitudes we could probably have done without ("In questa scena non vengo a fa' il divo, vengo a fare Dio")

Elsewhere the lyrics are smoother, almost whispered, over hazy beats with r'n'b flourishes ("L'astronauta") or atmospheric touches ("Un uomo"), with tentative sung moments ("Punto d'incontro", "Essere noi"). On "Forte" a synth-pop arrangement brings him close to the nostalgic Tommaso Paradiso, hinting at hit potential that would have seemed unthinkable just a few months ago. On this front, though, it's "Stupido pensiero" with Elisa that works best of all: a pained two-voice confession, steeped in fragility:

Freddo il tuo cuore, trappola e amore

Dici di me, io quasi mi ammalo

O ti sbrano

Quello che vuoi, sai, fa soffrire

Tra il bene e il male tu vedi sfocato

E io so perché

Cerchi il mostro e in fondo sai chi è

That Nayt is more than just another rapper has been clear to those following him for a while. "Io individuo" is precisely a reflection on his artistic identity, split between a few more hardcore memories and a present that leans increasingly toward songwriting, self-reflection and inner exploration. It's an album with moments worth remembering, adding to a vast discography that still lacks the one chapter destined to go down in the genre's history - perhaps weakened here by the urge to show off too many sides of his musical approach at once.
