MATRYOSHKA - Blasé Saint

2026 (Sferic)
ambient dub

Behind Matryoshka is Jacqueline Lawson, a young producer from Seattle with already clear ideas about nostalgia and intimacy applied to contemporary dub. Her pantheon is easy to spot: Burial, Space Afrika, the Chain Reaction school. But the way she reworks it avoids mere tribute. Like a post-hypnagogic whisper forged amid jagged sub lines and shattered rhythms, Lawson already shows a precise voice, able to hold together the genre's cornerstones and the most recent sadcore curvatures.

"Blasé Saint" is a nocturnal journey close to the poetics of Rod Modell: chords embroidered over rainfall and urban fragments, like evanescent sighs bringing its most introverted side into focus. The eight tracks sketch out a hyperconnected, technologically saturated reality, from which Lawson seems to carve out a personal form of escape. A soundscape for four in the morning, caught between solitude and insomnia. "Ecstasy Shield" comes close to the peak, while the title-track works as a hypnotic loop that slowly dissolves into a dissociated fog.

Here a nostalgia for the present takes shape, made of bionic, lulling atmospheres ("Jewelry Burns"), stretched-out chords and smoky reverbs ("Parted By The Sea"), almost as if William Basinski were filtered through instrumental cloud rap ("Silk Sheets On Concrete"). The only limitation lies in a natural inclination toward restraint, which in a few passages reduces its staying power. But "Blasé Saint" wins you over from the first listen and grows with time. A debut unafraid of silence, one that knows when to let the darkness do the talking.
