Psychedelic art-punk from Cesena, spiced up with garage flashes, a hefty dose of irony and a name that certainly grabs attention. Two years after forming, LOVVBÖMBING! debut with “PISS! PEAS! PEACE!”, an album whose tracks have already earned them even a small endorsement from Pitchfork. The quartet - Francesco Brandolini (vocals and guitar), Federico Canducci (bass), Francesco Lucchi (guitar) and Lorenzo Ricci (drums) - moves through grimy sounds enriched by fuzzy guitars and heart-pounding rhythms, looking back at the Seventies of the legendary Electric Prunes, the prolific Black Lips, and a slice of the crazed Australian scene anchored by Tropical Fuck Storm, Pond, King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.
The excellent “Esquisito River” comes in with a flying kick, winking at the Gun Club of “Fire Of Love”, along with a central instrumental detour built on monolithic guitar-riffs à-la Jon Spencer, followed by the long intro driven by the resolute drumbeats of “Whyte Rabbyt”, a crescendo that culminates in a frenzied seventies garage mood.
Among the sonic layers of “James Pond”, guitars once again take center stage, initially placid but gradually building toward an epic finale, to which the spatial distortions of the brief improvised interlude “Sydney Weenie” latch on. The eccentric, lopsided sprints of “Fajitas (Poliz Navidad)” represent one of the album's main peaks, continuing with the hard rock attitudes and polyrhythms of “Doodly Doo” and “Fury”. Another focal point of the record is “President Alien”, a short but intricate track where political satire, frantic changes of pace and occasional nods to Devo stand out. The cosmic, hallucinated guitars of “Majestic Silver Seas” serve as an antechamber to the finale left to “Telejunkies”, where the curtain falls on hardcore influences in Minor Threat territory.
In short, LOVVBÖMBING!'s “PISS! PEAS! PEACE!” proves how spontaneity can pay off, and how the blend of garage assaults and psychedelia still has plenty to offer.
