LAUFEY - A Matter Of Time: The Final Hour

Laufey Lín Jónsdóttir, known professionally as Laufey, has generated plenty of buzz over the years: a “phenomenon” according to the New York Times, the girl bringing jazz to Gen Z, the neoclassical singer taking TikTok by storm. Yet she keeps forging her own path, backed by streaming numbers worthy of a mainstream popstar, a 2024 Grammy for her second album (“Bewitched”), and sold-out world tours.

“A Matter Of Time”, released in 2025, returns in 2026 in an expanded edition, confirming — even from an editorial standpoint — the intent to fuse the conventions of contemporary pop with her deliberately retro sound, blending orchestral jazz-pop, film-score flourishes and touches of bossa nova. Compared to the previous album, “A Matter Of Time” takes a step toward folk and pop, and in its focus on self-exploration and vulnerability it also leans toward sounds better suited to filling the increasingly large venues now hosting her live shows. 

The thematic core of the lyrics revolves around time slipping away inexorably, a metaphor for fleeting loves, regrets and emotional growth: “The moment Cinderella runs away at midnight”, as Laufey herself pitched the record. There are breakups with friends (“Castle In Hollywood”, home to one of the album's most accomplished melodies), fear of love (“Lover Girl”, “Silver Lining”), and criticism of female body standards (“Snow White”), which also ties into her relationship with Iceland, as a girl with a Chinese mother who left the island to chase her dreams: on this front, “Forget-Me-Not” stands out, sung in Icelandic and built around melodies drawn from traditional folk songs. 

The expanded edition, “The Final Hour”, adds 4 further tracks, closing out the emotional arc around the passage of time and the anxieties it brings. A world tour follows in support, confirming her ever-growing success.
