FAMILY STEREO - Fault Lines

2026 (2026)
dream-folk

It's never easy for the child of famous musicians to step into the music world without inviting comparisons and echoes of their parents' work. Charlie Watt – whose parents are Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn – elegantly sidesteps the issue, building a sonic architecture that rarely calls their family legacy to mind. Only the rhythmic hint in "Fault Lines" slips into a faint nod to the electronic and drum'n'bass contaminations that carried the album "Walking Wounded" to worldwide success.

Released by Simon Raymonde's Bella Union, Family Stereo's debut album is the product of a solid creative partnership with producer Sam Hodder-Williams, who's responsible for the elegant, near-chamber-folk dress of "The Thread". The post-Nick Drake strings of the title track, the fluid indie-pop weave of "DLR" and the beguiling piano touch of "Remedy" reveal a multi-faceted talent. Though the flawless staging isn't always matched by equally substantial songwriting, all the ingredients are there for a richer future.
Charlie Watt proves himself a skilled storyteller on the melancholy, far-from-trite "Silhouette On The Hill" and digs into the best of singer-songwriter folk-pop tradition on the romantic, evocative "Tunnels", a song whose banjo carries it toward sonic territories reminiscent of Sufjan Stevens.

There's plenty going on in "The Thread", from the gripping melody of "Waiting On Nina" (made even more striking by the sound of the lap steel) to the disorienting use of synths on "Sea Change", perhaps the track that most reinforces the family ties at the record's core. And even when routine seems to get the better of inspiration ("Removed"), there are signs of potential future developments, like the unpredictable closing coda of "Collapsing".
A promising debut for Charlie Watt who, even if it doesn't fully live up to the loftiest expectations, proves delightful and inspired enough to make us want to follow his future releases very closely.
