Fabiano do Nascimento is a Brazilian guitarist, composer and producer who has, over time, earned credibility and authority for his innovative approach to jazz, marked by a strong expressiveness. “Vila” is his fourteenth album, 11 tracks for around 49 minutes of music, recorded between Rio and Los Angeles. The inspiration for this work comes from do Nascimento's childhood, spent in a courtyard surrounded by neocolonial houses in Rio de Janeiro. For the occasion, the musician is joined by Vittor Santos and his orchestra.
Over the years (and across his albums) his guitar has already ventured into duets and musical dialogues: from saxophonist Sam Gendel (“The Room”), to producer E Ruscha V (“Aquàticos”), influenced by electronics, all the way to the various musicians featured on “Cavejaz”; however “Vila” marks an evolution in do Nascimento's output, since this time the guitarist takes on an orchestral collaboration. So we hear a massive string presence enriching the sound and lending it a certain muscularity; yet Fabiano's delicate guitar remains at the center of the tracks, playing its soloist role as the ability to weave seamlessly with the orchestra's dynamic range.
Among the finest moments are “Spring Theme”, in which the guitar seems surrounded by the orchestra's swirl; “Valsa”, which recalls the melancholic vibe of the solo work “Ykytu” (2021); “Floresta Dos Sonhos”, the longest track, with cradling strings; and, in the second half, “Plateau” and “Vittor e Fabi”, which embody the dialogue between guitarist and orchestra. A special mention goes to “O Tempo (Foi o Meu Mestre)”, in which do Nascimento's virtuosity plays on the instrument's rhythm to captivate the listener.
This album is all about atmosphere, focused on bringing out the most melodic and delicate side of stringed instruments, telling the story of childhood and its weight of hope and nostalgia through sound and the encounter between instruments.
