ELUVIUM - Virga III

It's been five years since the last chapter in the "Virga" series by Eluvium. A project conceived by Matthew Robert Cooper to give a deeply introspective shape to his vision of ambient. A body of work that has always stood out for its distinctive balance between rarefaction and classical composition, arriving at ever-shifting results, often of fine craftsmanship.

If previous releases sprang from specific circumstances that led to periods of isolation – a snowstorm for the first, the pandemic for the next – "Virga III" moves from a reflection born of observing the minute universe in comparison to our historical reality. On one side, marginal biological ecosystems such as those observable in drainage channels; on the other, a socio-political present made of violence and abuse of power.

From this premise emerge unexpectedly luminous soundscapes, atmospheric abstractions as far removed from the decaying Basinski-esque structures of "Virga I" as they are from the restless tones of its predecessor. The tracks forgo expansiveness in favor of concise cores – with the exception of the dream-ambient drift of "Communication" – inclined toward a swifter arrival at climax. Exemplary of this compositional choice are the title track, with its swelling loops painting an emphatic melody, and even more so the moving sacredness of "The Fires At Night".

Eluvium's voice shines again here, at times recapturing the very trait that made him one of the most representative artists in ambient music at the turn of the millennium.
