DOMIZIANO MASELLI - Garden Of Kira

2026 (Torto editions)
electroacoustic, electronic

Milanese audiovisual artist Domiziano Maselli, already a member of the Milanese collective Eremo and of the electroacoustic project Finnegan Tapes, began his solo career in 2018 with “Ashes”, followed by “Themes/Soundscapes From Promesa” (2022) and “Lazzaro” (2021).

Over these years he has also collaborated at the Greenhouse studios in Reykjavík with Valgeir Sigurðsson and, above all, with Ben Frost, for whom he made the video for “Tritium Bath” from the album “Scope Neglect“. Frost himself contributes to the recent “Garden Of Kira” (2026), and his touch can be felt almost everywhere. There's no peace in Kira's garden, at least not always. The percussive pulses of “Amber” kick off the album only to be torn apart by a series of distortions, like the sound of two sonic worlds suddenly fracturing, colliding and generating unbearable friction before settling into a new equilibrium by the track's end.

“The Garden Of Time” sounds as if it were lifted straight from the “Japanese” records of Tim Hecker (2018's “Konoyo” and 2019's “Anoyo”), building a mounting tension out of sonic material that invites meditation. This duality, which unfolds within the very same track, runs through the compositions most shaped by Ben Frost's influence, only to dissolve in “Kira”, the album's driest and most minimal piece: a simple sequence of notes that slowly unspools over what could be mistaken for a sitar in the background, searching for meaning it finally finds around the five-minute mark with an unexpected, almost melodic opening. The electronics pulse through “A Fire Hidden Behind The Bones”, its Eastern-tinged notes providing continuity with the rest of the record.

The journey through the garden eventually leads outside with “Something Mysterious Outside”, a simple field recording of cicadas: the only trace of life, it turns out, lies beyond the garden, which suddenly loses the meaning it seemed to carry at the start. A corner of peace in which to rediscover oneself, or the metaphor for a cage to escape from? Who knows. Ambiguity and conflict remain essential elements of Domiziano Maselli's music.
