DEADBEAT - Kansai Botanicals

2026 (Quiet details)
ambient dub

This new work is signed Deadbeat, made for Quiet Details, an English label built on a simple concept: the artist's own interpretation of the label's name. For the occasion, Scott Monteith shapes a slow-tempo piece around rich field recordings: an underwater chillout rendered through organic landscapes, with slow, filtered percussion, dub chords with a hypnagogic feel, and tons of concrete and abstract sounds, feedback, hiss, watery notes. Every edge is smoothed out to deliver a soft, velvety sonic texture.

Works like 2002's "Wild Life Documentaries" and 2011's "Drawn And Quartered" marked out the post-laptop school of electronic music, shot through with the acrid smoke of minimalism and the legacy of the most urban techno. Little of that sinister air remains today: in its place emerge liquid, warm textures, though tempered by a constant dub chord. Something that recalls the more ambient side of Monolake, as if his live set were wrapped in equatorial wildlife, amid the vapours of wet asphalt and urban greenhouses.

The main flaw coincides, in part, with its consistency: the eight tracks share the same theme and a similar narrative arc, micro-variations on a single idea that end up feeling overly uniform. It could have been much shorter without losing anything. Reservations aside, Monteith still knows how to build an enveloping sound. It hardly matters if, over time, it tends to turn in on itself.
