DAGMAR ZUNIGA - In Filth Your Mystery Is Kingdom / Far Smile Peasant In Yellow Music

2026 (Ad 93)
experimental, primitive folk

A cassette quietly circulated on Bandcamp starting January 8th, 2025, a first tentative CD-r edition released by the label People's Coalition Of Tandy, a growing wave of interest from listeners, and finally an LP and CD edition dated April 2026 and distributed by the UK label AD 93: "In Filth Your Mystery Is Kingdom / Far Smile Peasant In Yellow Music" has revealed to the world the deliberately unripe talent of Dagmar Zuniga, an attention won through a series of short, crooked songs that it would be irreverent to call lo-fi, melodies examined under a microscope, fragile and fleeting.

Dagmar Zuniga regenerates the term underground through a celebration of imperfection: it's the logos that becomes myth, a whisper that turns into song, a deconstruction of the most primitive folk material through creative rituals closer to experimentation and musique concrète. Fourteen tremors that have kept a not-quite-bloodless skeleton of composition, a delicate assemblage of sounds and noises that acts as a counterweight to the sterility of technology and pushes the listener toward a new approach to folk material — or rather, roots material.
Ever since June 2026, when Dagmar Zuniga opened three dates on the latest Mount Eerie tour, there's been a scramble to dig up the artist's history, turning up a trio project under the name Dagmar Vork, but nothing that hinted at the magically raw ethics and methodology of "In Filth Your Mystery Is Kingdom / Far Smile Peasant In Yellow Music".

It's tempting to think of an album like "Roman Candle" by Elliott Smith, but a more fitting comparison is with the restless beauty of Nico's "Desertshore" ("Plenty (For All Of Life's Messes)"), or with certain experiments by Bruce Gilbert (traceable in the hypnotic "In Filth Your Mystery Is Kingdom" and the dark "LN60: Jupiter Opposite Jupiter") and Scanner (the closing track, "To Live Happily", could pass for an outtake from one of his albums).
The true protagonist of the Nicaraguan-American artist's debut, though, is the Tascam recorder, the perfect tool for capturing the kind of brutal beauty that Tim Buckley and Karen Dalton translated into poetry ("Garden"), and that the Roches ("Plenty For All The Masses") and the Velvet Underground mystified as modern music ("Photography The Hard Way", "Even God Gets Stuck In Devotion").

In just thirty minutes of silences, folk lullabies with a confessional tone and analog noise, Dagmar Zuniga sings of loneliness without ever naming it, of fragments of madness while staying sober, preserving a remarkable narrative coherence, as her voice floats and whispers as if searching for safe harbour. It's the intensity of these compositions that is the winning weapon of an album that makes no secret of its similarities but doesn't treasure them either (Dagmar Zuniga has named the Fall and Syd Barrett among her influences) — instead she wears them down and dissolves them, until they become new material for future creative distortions.
