CHARLOTTE DAY WILSON - Patchwork

2026 (Stone woman/xl)
electro-soul, jazz-pop

Ten years have passed since Charlotte Day Wilson's debut EP, a promising mini-album ("CDW") with fine r&b and soul sounds that found a worthy follow-up in her two albums, "Alpha" in 2021 and "Cyan Blue" in 2025.

The Canadian artist has so far shown a keen ear for refined interplay with pop and jazz tones, and both albums stood out for the extreme care given to those nuances that are often sacrificed in favour of more bombastic productions — a choice partly rewarded by a Grammy nomination for her latest album.

"Patchwork" is a somewhat atypical project for Charlotte Day Wilson. Here it's the DIY approach that takes centre stage rather than the jazz-soul elegance of her previous chapters. It's an exploratory record, where imperfection becomes an expressive language. "Patchwork" isn't an experimental work so much as a return to the roots of her passion for soul music, a creative universe where her devotion to Stevie Wonder shines through ("High Road"), along with a sense of wonder at the early unions of soul and electronics (the title track), the smooth-soul sound that defined an era ("If Only"), and those club-music leanings kept in check until now, perhaps the Toronto artist's next frontier ("Selfish").

Unfortunately, "Patchwork" remains an album strictly for the artist's fans. A shame, because the adventurous synth carpet of the sensual, more experimental "Lean" and the delightful Bobby Caldwell-esque keyboard touches and yacht-soul groove of "Quiet" hint at interesting developments to come.

Charlotte Day Wilson has so far proven she has taste and class, but with this brief EP she flaunts a pioneering spirit that will surely bring positive returns for the future of her career. Stay tuned.
