ANNALISA DE FEO - Life

2026 (Filibusta)
modern classical

Solo debut for pianist Annalisa De Feo, who has featured on these pages several times for her excellent work as the guiding spirit behind the ambitious Dreamlike Sound Duo project. With the nine tracks of "Life", Annalisa chooses to return to the essence of the piano, played masterfully and without any recourse to electronics, showing just how capable this instrument is, even on its own, of filling any available space, becoming a means of undertaking a genuine sonic inquiry. Annalisa doesn't face the challenge entirely alone: some of the tracks are recorded with the collaboration of Dario Miranda on double bass and Ermanno Baron on drums. The passages, by turns rarefied and turbulent, reveal the remarkable rapport between the three musicians, always ready to abandon classical conventions to chase the unexpected turn, pushing right up to the edge of dissonance. The album shows great conceptual coherence, a compositional maturity that treats each piece as a tile in a larger mosaic.

The language here is that of chamber pop: piano textures – always the beating heart of Annalisa De Feo's artistic voice – act as a nervous skeleton, seeking a delicate balance in which the "classical" isn't betrayed but expanded into new territory. Clear registers, open resonances and lucid melodies alternate with improvised clusters, rhythmic fragmentation and ostinatos built on extended techniques. What unfolds in "Arabesque" is a web of paths in which each melody generates another, every deviation a detail enriching the overall weave, moving between impetuous crescendos and sonic geometries of rare elegance. "Miniature" is a genuine sonic ecosystem, a work of radical improvisation in which the trio abandons predefined structures to devote itself to exploration. "Nina" is pure silk running through the fingers, "Mirage Of Resonance" is avant-garde work achieved through the striking of struck strings, while Annalisa's voice becomes the emotional fulcrum in the finale, in the reprise of "Nina" for solo piano and voice.

The compositions move along a line stretched between nostalgia for a certain classicism and the curiosity to explore new tonal possibilities, a discreet, courteous sonic research that never seeks to overwhelm the listener, but rather leads them by the hand, revealing a world that at times proceeds by subtraction (as in the opening "Prélude"), at other times through gradual accumulation, through successive layering. This is not background music, nor an album that can be absorbed through distracted listening: it's a work that demands dedication, an inner journey born of intense research – musical and spiritual – that finds in the piano its deepest expressive core. A path that intertwines the artist's personal history with the universal breath of existence, ultimately questioning the very mystery of life. An emotional landscape, a secret diary written in a personal language, which the artist arrives at by moving through a borderland, in constant balance between classical tradition, jazz references and contemporary sonic aesthetics. At a time when everyone is rushing breathlessly toward the next trend, Annalisa De Feo's return is an invitation to slow down and listen, carefully.
