AMY GRANT - The Me That Remains

2026 (Thirty Tigers)
country, pop-rock

The country genre holds the title of music strongly identified with America's social and political dualism, a style conceptually rebellious in the golden years of Greenwich Village and the Woodstock era, firmly against the system and on the side of the underdog, in the hands of writers like Johnny Cash or Waylon Jennings, and still subversive today thanks to tenacious artists like Sturgill Simpson. At the same time, though, country music is also one of the most reactionary or accommodating languages around, especially in its guise as contemporary Christian music.

Amy Grant long stood as one of the finest embodiments of country music leaning toward the lure of pop music and Christian music. After winning six Grammys and a platinum record, with more than 30 million records sold, she stayed away from the scene for over thirteen years. In 2022 Amy Grant fell off her bike, suffering serious brain injuries; her slow physical and mental recovery coincided with a rediscovered songwriting streak and her return to recording under the Thirty Tigers banner, with the album "The Me That Remains", a pleasantly mainstream record.

It's a time-warp shock that hits the listener as these ten new songs go by. The polished, glossy FM-radio country-rock sound of "The 6th Of January (Yasgur's Farm)" and the title track reek of the '90s, the light funky bounce of "Til We Get It Right", the mock calypso exoticism of "(Nothing Like A) Sunny Day" and the successful country-blues drive of "The Other Side Of Goodbye" are the few variables that remain, in any case, functional to a project with broad commercial ambitions, one not lacking in skilled professionalism and at least one song worth saving from mediocrity ("How Do We Get There From Here") — enough for the fans, but too little to pique interest beyond the good news of the author's full recovery after the accident.
