AL DOUM & THE FARYDS - Ipnagogico

2026 (Black Sweat/La Tempesta)
psych-ethno-jazz

Having passed the fifteen-year mark, Al Doum & The Faryds have become an authoritative name on the Italian psych underground circuit. "Ipnagogico", their sixth album, consolidates a formula in which the Milanese collective's richly psychedelic sound blends with an overwhelming, exotic-tinged strain of ethno-jazz. Driving rhythms, horns that seek out dissonance, electric guitars that don't shy away from infectious solos, all delivered in a mode of "calculated improvisation" that leaves room for individual musicianship while staying within the nimble bounds of the "song format". A positive, vital, energetic atmosphere, enriched by festive vocal arrangements.

Al Doum & The Faryds are a genuine musical community, one that has grown over the years to its current ten members, a team that has always maintained absolute independence: they record at Guscio Recording, the studio owned by Lorenz (the guitarist), and release their music through Black Sweat Records, the label founded by singer and bassist Davide Domenichini. They even have a sister band, with whom they share part of their line-up, Addict Ameba, whom we discussed a couple of years ago following the release of the album "Caosmosi", another eclectic, visionary project designed to break down both stylistic and geographic boundaries.

On "Ipnagogico" the hypnotic component becomes less pronounced than in the past (significant traces remain in "Money II", the most lysergic moment, with its wah wah guitars), giving way instead to a carnival of sounds and colors (on "Borracho" it feels like being in Rio), with the only meditative moments arriving in "Money I" (with its more spiritual streak) and "Utopia II", which retains something Pink Floyd-esque, its guitar at times recalling Gilmour.

The album is structured around three core sections ("Arise", "Money", "Utopia"), each split into two movements; every core is separated by an additional track ("Borracho" and "Party Cells"). Free-form architectures for a modern take on world music.
