ALBERT ENO - II

Second solo chapter for Albert Eno after his 2021 debut “Dark'n'Stormy”. Born in 1980, the former Kismet frontman drops any superstructure to place the concept of duality at the heart of the narrative: two, like two parallel lines running side by side without ever intersecting, a metaphor for many kinds of relationships, not just romantic ones. The album sets out to explore precisely the thin space separating those two lines: distance, memory, the need to stay, the fear of losing oneself. But “II” is above all meant to be a collection of songs about the persistence of bonds, told through an intimate register, moving within the realm of an essential electro-acoustic singer-songwriter style rooted in the legacy of masters of the calibre of Jeff Buckley and Chris Cornell (with all due distinctions), where the voice becomes an expressive force carrying an enormous emotional weight.

Made up of ten tracks and produced together with Ugo Bolzoni at Moscow Mule Studio, the record boasts a series of collaborations that decisively enrich its sonic palette. First and foremost Frida Bollani Magoni (the very young daughter of Stefano Bollani), on piano and vocals in the moving “Stay”, the absolute high point of the project, then the guitars of Alessandro “Crivez” Crivellari, which help build the rarefied atmospheres of “Empty Lung Apnea”, and the voice of Martlene, which elevates the delicate closing track, “Lullaby”.

Albert's minimalist inspiration takes on multiple shades along the way, the fruit of a lifetime of listening, showing just how much the bare essentials of voice and guitar can strike the deepest chords, and how formal simplicity and authenticity can translate into real artistic depth. Auteur pop, melodic and refined, not without the odd welcome ripple of tension (“Be Your World”).
