WATER FROM YOUR EYES - It’s A Beautiful Place

2025 (Matador)
alt-rock, experimental rock

A new effort from the American duo made up of Nate Amos and Rachel Brown, who with this new work once again prove they possess a fervent inspiration. Compared to the past, the album leans more heavily into alternative rock sounds. That much is clear from the opening track "Life Signs", which immediately sets out the record's leitmotif: a more direct approach, with songs that are less ethereal but no less compelling for it.

Built on a destabilizing meter, the track alternates jagged, cutting electric guitars with softer arpeggios, before exploding into a furious, visceral guitar solo that in a way winks at the showmanship of John Frusciante.

The following "Nights in Armor" is fairly eclectic too, a track that draws mainly on Nineties pop, echoing the dynamism of Mew and the sophistication of Stereolab, thanks to a flow that mixes energetic, somewhat ramshackle guitars with decidedly sweeter melodies.

"Born 2" is a concentrate of shoegaze and grunge sounds, with guitars building a wall of sound reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine, though the smooth keyboards slightly soften the sound's imposing weight.

"Playing Classics" is the album's most danceable and infectious track, a true dance-punk anthem. The use of hi-hat percussion and a bass line steeped in disco music clash with distorted guitars and vocal samples, creating a mix that's chaotic yet thoroughly engaging. "Blood On The Dollar", on the other hand, is a soft, gentle ballad whose minimal arrangement, almost like a raw demo, stages a melancholy reflection on the apathy of modern life.

The current sound of Water From Your Eyes is the synthesis of an artistic path that has evolved over time. On one hand, they've kept intact their penchant for odd time signatures and complex structures, but on the other they've fused it with the power and versatility of guitars, previously used more sparingly. The result is a more immediate kind of music, one that retains all the depth of the lyrics and the ability to confound and captivate the listener. "It's A Beautiful Place" is a substantial album that, thanks to its obsessive attention to detail, confirms Water From Your Eyes as one of the brightest bands on the current indie scene.
