TURQUOISEDEATH - Guardian

2025 (Plantasia)
drum and bass, trance

We know Turquoisedeath for their hybrids, where vaporwave nostalgia worms its way into a cyberpunk-inflected amen break. The artist, an anonymous entity who lives purely online, turns code into stream of consciousness: a synthetic thought that generates destructured beats, epic trance and space ambient ecosystems. If the previous “Kaleidoscope” showed them off as an eclectic sound designer of the new futurism, here the foundations expand to more elements, vulnerable to the machine's errors.

The work pushes toward accumulation.

Themes shift relentlessly, building a maximalist labyrinth of loops and breaks chasing transcendence. The will to deliver the fury of hyper-fast connection runs up against a contradiction: the sheer mass of information is such that listening quickly becomes numbing.

It's in the airier moments that balance emerges: “Guardian Surface” comes across as an immersion in progressive house waters, and “Voyager” delivers six minutes of dreamlike reverie suspended over uplifting emotions, that language glorified by Tiësto and Armin van Buuren, rewritten for a homegrown alphabet, almost a kind of post-emo for dreampunk eras.

Marking the rhythm, urban frenzy compressed into 170 bpm phrasing and constant mutations: the kick recodes itself, the bass changes state, the transformations are countless. Chords, arpeggios, vocal fragments and drum patterns follow one another so fast as to be dizzying. Ambition is not lacking, as in “Close Your Eyes”, a veritable suite that explores downtempo, dilated sections and jungle hysterics, but the promise dissipates into a sequence that never finds cohesion.
