It's an almost natural evolution for the London band, now on their third difficult album, carrying a post-punk baggage with mixed results, and now ready to step into the more introspective and pained phase of their own creative coming out.
Asha Lorenz and Louis O'Bryen have never really stood out for originality, at times drawn to alt-pop languages and savvy nods to vaguely retro stylistic territory, from glam to blues, yet never sounding like nostalgists.
"Cosplay" is the band's most cohesive and solid album: the indecision between past and present has been intelligently set aside ("Echoes"), the more mannered atmospheres of the past are almost absent ("Antelope"), and the band leans toward sharper, darker tones ("Jetplane").
"Cosplay" is also the band's most eclectic and daring project: the industrial impulses of "Waxwing" and the noise and r&b distortions of "Love Posture" muddy the waters, shifting from unease to outright unsettling ("Magic").
Sorry's post-punk imagery has evolved. The setting is more David Lynch than Quentin Tarantino, the stories are more surreal than visceral, and the interplay between the two voices is more balanced and less chaotic. The musical structure has also happily adapted to this new creative status ("Into The Dark"), giving us the band's most compact record yet, along with some promising hints for the future ("Life In This Body", "JIVE").
