LISA MARINI - Dive Through The Moon

2025 (Self released)
blues, folk, jazz

The premises were promising: an interesting debut, hailed by the press as one of the year's revelations ("Born In Tribes", 2020), and an expressive potential that boded well for the future. Singer, producer and visual artist Lisa Marini, however, chose to keep a low profile, releasing two albums with virtually no promotion. A shame, because both "Buried Town" (2023) and the latest "Dive Through The Moon" hold up well against her debut.

Lisa Marini wrote and produced her third album entirely on her own. Blues, folk and jazz remain at the heart of her refined melodies, in which her ethereal voice hovers like the enchanting song of sirens. There's very little conventional about these ten new songs, and it's perhaps in this intimate, rigorously creative dimension that the London artist's music resides, waiting for the spark of magic that will finally win over the public.

Having lived through no easy circumstances – a mother struggling with mental illness, running away from home at the age of 12, drugs and alcohol as companions through difficult times – Marini remains true to a music marked by strong poetic and spiritual undertones.

Piano ballads with a faint touch of soul brio ("A Sky Fell"), dreamlike lullabies sung in a hushed voice ("Tin Petals") and delightful jazz-blues blends ("Old Skin") fit together perfectly on a record whose only flaw remains a certain emotional austerity. It's as if the artist wanted to avoid any indulgent concessions to romanticism or expressive simplification, and that's a good thing, because "Dive Through The Moon" is not an album to be consumed quickly - whether we're talking about gripping folk-jazz ballads (the ethno-folk of "Stage A Worth" and the melodic tenacity of the title track) or intense, musically sophisticated and elaborate reflective pieces, like the noir jazz-folk of "Lost In Home" and the cosmic-folk-psych ecstasy of "Farida".

"Dive Through The Moon" is an album that alternates between anguished tones ("Something Sings", "Cold Or Burning") and slightly more airy moments ("Wax And Wane"), yet never feels ordinary or superfluous. Dedicated to those silent female figures, to those women and mothers full of compassion and open arms for others, Lisa Marini's latest record is a refined example of songwriting that steers clear of easy acoustic-folk simplification, a project cared for down to the smallest detail, from the artwork to the videos.
