LAC SEUL - Destinations

Outsider house is one of those phenomena that sprouted in the underground clubbing scene of the 2010s, only to quietly fade away with the turn of the decade. Or at least, that's what we thought. Its formula boils down to a handful of elements: the mechanical pulse of the 4/4 beat crosses paths with vaporwave coordinates, yielding a sound that's nostalgic and tactile yet liquid, raw and luminous at once. A style that found its natural habitat on the web: YouTube channels with glitched-out aesthetics, vintage VHS-era ads framing tracks that evoke the Nineties with an unprecedented sheen, scaling house music down to a domestic ritual.

The return of Lac Seul is a precious drift along the blurred border between dreaminess and nostalgia, but also an act of expressive self-awareness that departs from the rawness of L.I.E.S., the genre's cornerstone label, in favor of a more meditative, atmospheric register. Elegant in its dialogue between hiss and ambient house, "Destinations" marks the fourth chapter for the Los Angeles duo made up of Tile Plazas and Jarred Carrigan, co-founder of Jungle Gym Records, a label that has managed to forge a sound suspended between dance rituals and new age mysticism.

The record redefines the duo's vocabulary, leaving behind the downtempo whispers and dub techno haze of their early releases. A strategic renunciation in favor of a sound that's essential yet carefully attentive to timbre, where the texture turns airier and the rhythm sheds specific weight without losing direction. As on the title track, the beat programming is set between graceful, enveloping grooves. The listening experience glides by like a gentle current: the rest is left to the imagination.
