Where were we? The prestigious collaboration with Rocket Recordings, a long series of successful albums, the latest of which, "In The Silence Electric", was released back in 2019. Six years on, Julie's Haircut return under the banner of a break within continuity.
The fil rouge running through the albums of the Emilian outfit is a dark-hued psychedelia that Luca Giovanardi and co. have explored from every possible angle. "Radiance Opposition" is perhaps the latest piece of the puzzle, eight songs in which the darkness is torn open by a brand new soul soul. Italian-Nigerian singer Anna Bassy has indeed joined the fold, and it's somewhat surprising to hear how the material has been shaped around her presence, tempering some of the band's more radical (and deeply rooted) inflections without abandoning the project's core identity.
Tucked within the folds of the new material are trip-hop cadences ("To The Sacred Mantle"), psych-rock mantras infused with a whole new spirituality ("Unit Circle"), right through to the electric coven of "Extinction Of The Sun" which, alongside the dark uptempo of "The Earth Knows" (not without echoes of Black Angels), stands as the most inspired moment on "Radiance Opposition". A record that testifies to change within continuity, a bold and undoubtedly intriguing lateral move, even if there's still the sense that plenty of potential remains untapped.
