A year after the explosive “Tongues Of Flames”, Garuda Trio and Rodrigo Pinheiro have reunited to record together. “Live At Smup” was recorded live on March 21, 2024 at SMUP in Parede, a small town near Lisbon, during a fiery evening that was not without surprises. A band rehearsing in the club's basement forced Costa and company to turn up the volume of their performance. Despite the unforeseen circumstances, the evening was a success.
Hugo Costa (alto sax), Hernâni Faustino (double bass) and João Valinho (drums) have found the ideal travelling companion in Rodrigo Pinheiro, a Portuguese pianist who, in the space of a decade, has become a pillar of European jazz thanks to his many collaborations with international musicians.
The album is split into two very long improvisations. “Climbing Mountains” starts quietly, slowly, before sax and piano begin to build a tension that grows ever more present and tangible, while double bass and drums weave a rhythmic fabric that is subtle yet incisive. “The Eye Of The Storm”, the album's second track, opens instead with an eruption of incandescent lava, all the musicians ready to step up front and improvise, following trajectories that trace sixty years of free-jazz history. A sound that is sharp but never unsettling: a surreal harmony in which every instrument contributes meaningfully to the collective creation.
An intense and extremely dynamic album, in which tradition and innovation meet (and clash) to deliver fifty minutes of spectacular contemporary and experimental jazz.
