Étienne de Crécy still feels like having fun and giving fun, a seasoned yet still restless protagonist (one of many) of that wonderful movement that was French Touch. “Warm Up”, released in March 2025 on Pixadelic, is yet another confirmation of that.
The rule is simple but effective: each of the eleven tracks is a featuring, not without its surprises. Even before the singles “World Away” (with Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip) and “Take It Back” (with Sports), polished in their own way and crowd-pleasing for various reasons, the formula reaches full fruition in at least three tracks truly worth noting: “Brass Band”, in which monsieur Superdiscount pulls a little dance gem with a kraut aftertaste out of his hat alongside Peter von Poehl; “Karma”, a pop-techno gem that would have made a fine showing on tons of radio playlists, featuring the voice of Olivia Merilahti; and finally – in every sense – “Rising Soul”, a rarefied and in its own way mystical synthetic incantation punctuated by the unmistakable timbre of Damon Albarn.
Electronic music is the beginning and end of everything, and it could hardly be otherwise, but ultimately “Wake Up” is a pop album in the least derogatory sense of the term, often cloaked, indeed, in an elegance that's genuinely rare these days.
