EAMON THE DESTROYER - The Maker’s Quit

2025 (Bearsuit)
art-pop

No point beating around the bush or hunting for further proof: the art-pop of painter and musician Eamon The Destroyer is as erudite and bizarre as it is delightful, and his third album, "The Maker's Quit", is the most accessible and direct thing he's put forward so far.

Restless and raw, yet also alluring and velvety, the Scottish artist's creations flirt with the visionary noir ethos of Warren Ellis and Nick Cave, infecting latin-folk rhythms with harmonium, noise and electro-folk dramaturgy ("The Ocean"), before sinking his fingers into alt-jazz sludge, playing with pauses and silences ("Captive"). The eccentric Scottish auteur brings funky rhythms to baroque arias with a noir attitude, somewhere between Serge Gainsbourg and Real Tuesday Weld, corrupting the melody with noise textures ("Silverback"), before condensing country, goth-folk, punk, noir, electro-pop, samba and French pop into five minutes ("Three Wheels").

Even when Eamon The Destroyer lays bare his pastoral, dreamlike soul (the title track) or hints at a more disciplined, almost pop melody ("Firefly In The Leg"), the constant impression is that of a diabolical carousel where sounds and voices act as instruments of seduction for unhealthy, vicious sonic rituals. Suddenly a touch of fingerpicking and Spanish music lures the listener into the most devious of the quasi-orchestral schemes on "The Maker's Quit", as Mitteleuropean roots merge and blur in a gothic-cabaret-style track that waits in vain for a liberating chorus ("Pleasureland").

Meanwhile the credits roll ("The Buffalo Sings"), amid more seductive melodic hints and devious organ textures lifted straight from the nightmares of Arab Strap.

That Eamon The Destroyer's music is, in the end, a deception is plain to see, but however disorienting, "The Maker's Quit" has all the traits of yet another act of resistance against cultural homogenization. A record that tugs at the very concept of art with a depth that enchants, seduces and corrupts.
