ENRICO CONIGLIO - The Sirens Of Titan

2024 (Dronarivm)
ambient, electroacoustic

The ability to probe different spheres of sound, giving shape to a multifaceted creative universe, has over the years become a distinctive trait of Enrico Coniglio's musical output. In particular, melodic research has gradually come to run alongside his landscape-based practice grounded in the documentary use of field recordings, generating increasingly hybrid itineraries explored either alone, as with My Home, Sinking, or in collaboration with various artists from the electroacoustic field — synergies among which the Open To The Sea project shared with Matteo Uggeri stands out.

Within this framework, it makes sense to find in sequence a work of pure field recording once again centered on the lagoon territory, namely "Lopa" (2023, Gruenrekorder), and the new "The Sirens Of Titan", an ambient record inspired by the Kurt Vonnegut novel of the same name.

The material with which Coniglio offers his own sonic transposition of the literary work is the same one used for "Alpine Variations": a constant intersection of acoustic textures and electronic vapors crossed by faint ripples, skillfully shaped into ascending, emotionally charged trajectories. The resulting electroacoustic matrix defines a succession of contemplative scenes punctuated by sparse piano droplets ("Flooded") and melancholy expanses of richly mottled vapor, whose sensory impact is amplified by the unfolding of poignant, filtered string textures ("Dmitry", "2020").

Each of these resonant chambers is paired with a transparency print of drawings specifically created by Alina Lutaeva, a further touch that rounds off a handsome physical edition, meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail, an integral part of a journey dominated by soft shadows and cosmic veins bolstered by shimmering guitar frequencies ("As They Arise", "As They Fall"). An evocative narrative that, in its final chapters, converges toward an Eno-esque take on the ambient idiom, dissolving into sinuous synthetic carpets that lead toward the enchantment of an endless twilight blue.
