Esotericism and occultism have been powerful triggers underpinning the most recent creations of Federico De Caroli, at least as far as the works most fully embedded in his more experimental electronic output are concerned. In particular, “Lucifero alchemico” (2021) and “Antimateria psichica” (2023) laid their foundations in this territory, crystallizing subterranean atmospheric itineraries in which the Savona-based composer carried forward his tireless sonic research.
Completing an ideal trilogy comes now “Strategia esoterica”, his twenty-second record, which further expands a vocabulary in constant evolution. The substrate is still dark-ambient, the tools mainly analogue synths and treated keyboards, but the structures devised here present combinations more varied than ever, open to disorienting convergences. The finest example of this approach can be found in the splendid “Esoteros”, with its deeply icy synthetic wind, which suddenly drops away to make room for a surprisingly melodic, vaguely baroque electronic landscape, one that is certainly of great impact.
Equally evocative is the juxtaposition of industrial atmospheres, sulphurous modulations enriched by unsettling vocal trails and dissonant fragments in “Genesi apocrifa”, a truly pitch-black ritual in which the elements most closely tied to Deca's vocabulary once again dominate the scene. It's a rich, skilfully chiseled universe that De Caroli has built, a sensory journey that invites surrender to an alchemy of sound as seductive as it is dark.
