The English-language title of the new album marks the definitive breakthrough of Russian band Lucidvox. Four women, Alina Evseeva, Anna Moskvitina, Galla Gintovt and Nadya Samudurova, devoted to a psychedelic rock darkly hued hard rock e krautsound, already the authors of three albums and a mini-LP, signed to Glitterbeat in 2020 with the record “We Are/Мы Есть”, and now ready to be put to the test in front of an international audience.

“That's What Remained” is a dense, vibrant record, at times powerful in the way it layers blazing guitars, horns and electronic manipulation (“There Ahead”), often leaning into disorienting blends of folk, goth and shoegaze (“Naidiya”), and not without a dreamy noir streak running through the prog, kraut-rock and noise of “Wandering”. This varied musical range doesn't just represent the best work the Moscow band has produced so far, but is the result of a collective cohesion that opens up intriguing new prospects for the future.

There's an overflowing urgency animating the shoegaze scrape that distorts old Russian melodies in “Don't Look Away”, while the electro-pop digressions of “Hold Me” are dressed in dark, originally crafted psych-rock textures — yet more sonic modulations that, combined with the turbulent shoegaze sound of the title track and the velvety guitar lines of “On The Way”, push the sound further toward a rock-psychedelic trance where music and words carry equal weight and dignity. In fact, the songs, though titled in English, are all sung in Russian.

With “That's What Remained”, Lucidvox take a decisive step in the right direction: a record that, while not without a few uncertain moments, deserves more than a passing glance.
