Love in its most elusive guises. A passion that slips away, ends up submitting, then comes back to muddy the waters, and finally disarms and strikes.

The paths of the heart sung (and sung about) by Vonamor are truly many. Urgent matters of the soul that turn into fatalism, through a style that lines up a variety of darkwave hysterias from the eternal 80s, adapting them to the mood being pursued.

Giulia Bottaro (vocals, bass, flute), Francesca Bottaro (drum station, sequencer, sax, clarinet, synth) and Luca Guidobaldi (vocals) deliver eight songs in which the ghosts of minimal-wave, so dear to nostalgists like Veronica Vasicka, to name one, cross paths with the gloomiest post-punk, staging an imaginary soundtrack for a noir film where blood flows in rivers but is almost never seen. The alchemy is cosmopolitan, too, sung in several languages: English, Italian, French, German and Chinese.

Vonamor is an electro-wave cabaret, now building in intensity ("Lucky You"), elsewhere reaching catharsis ("Never Beatray Us"), with the sax lines adding pathos here and there to the vocal interplay. At times, the trio holds back its frenzy, plugs into an electric socket and turns the knobs with a similarly restrained rhythm ("Take Your Heart"). If we're to draw a parallel, one might venture a hybrid of the late Virgin Prunes and the Humanbeast of "Venus Ejaculates Into The Banquet" ("You The People"). And even when shadows give way to desire, tenderness and dreams, there is no hurry: they drift between synthetic scores, minimal beats and dream-pop guitars ("Mother Night").

The self-titled debut of the Roman trio aims to capture the broken hearts of the most inconsolable lovers. A convincing first effort, which will undoubtedly make its mark, especially in the alternative clubs and dark-hued venues of the old (and battered) Europe.
