The visual works of Danish musician and collage artist Paw Grabowski have something ethereal, intangible and enigmatic about them, something that can't leave the viewer indifferent, just as any genuine work of art should do.
This time the cover of "Lav Sol" consists of a black-and-white image of two women in a wooded landscape, perhaps a Nordic one, gazing up at the sky. The one on the left has her body covered by an image of a red sun (the only touch of colour in the picture) over the sea, leaving only her eyes free; the other, blindfolded, mirrors her with a long black dress, her eyes hidden by the forest instead. The spirituality of these images, somewhere between pagan female deities and secular madonnas, leaves plenty of room for free interpretation.
The ever-prolific mastermind behind the Ojerum project (at least four or five releases a year) put out "Lav Sol" in 2022, an EP of three tracks each running close to ten minutes. Three typically ambient pieces, among which the fifteen minutes of the title track certainly stand out, built on electronics and wordless female vocals, pure invocations with no message, voice used as an instrument among synth notes that struggle to find a melody they never quite reach.
As ever, Grabowski invites us to reflect, treating music as a tool for stepping outside the surrounding world in order to find a small space of silence that shuts out the background noise around us — the only place that can bring us closer to a kind of reflection undisturbed by outside interference. Grabowski truly manages to give us these spaces of freedom, and it's up to the listener to know how to use them.
