After more than ten years away, Jorge Muñoz-Cobo resurrects Doctor Explosión, one of the historic bands of Hispanic and international garage rock. The Asturian group, active since 1989, adds a member to its long-standing trio for this latest psych-tinged outing, "Superioridad Moral," which they describe as the "album of maturity" for Doctor Explosión, without giving up the elements that have defined their music for more than three decades: psychedelic shadings, punk attitude, and beat revivalism.
"Superioridad Moral" moves quickly, with ten tracks that barely exceed three minutes; only "Mi Lista De Cosas Que Hacer" and "Paleto" stretch beyond that, but without disrupting the Doctor Explosión formula: derivative garage rock, fuzzed-out guitar racket, and psychedelic midtempo grooves, while Muñoz-Cobo wails like a 1960s crooner.
All told, a welcome return for garage enthusiasts and fans of Spanish rock, though it seems unlikely they'll venture much further afield.
And really, why ask Doctor Explosión to do anything different? They already deliver plenty, with their heavy doses of self-deprecating humor, their knack for songwriting, their impeccable production and their technical skill. It's hard to listen to tracks like "El Día Que David Bowie Murió" and "Vestir De Mujer" without finding yourself humming them days later.
