SYDNEY SPRAGUE - Maybe I Will See You At The End Of The World

2021 (Rude)
folk-rock, pop-rock

“Maybe I Will See You At The End Of The World” is not an ordinary debut album. For Sydney Sprague, it is more the culmination of a long story of promises, obstacles and second thoughts. A project not left to chance, but conceived with perseverance, stubbornness and a desire to explore endless creative possibilities.

For the musician from Phoenix, Arizona, these ten tracks are fertile ground for an energetic jolt to the pop-rock universe, with inspirations drawn entirely from modern women in rock: from Avril Lavigne to Phoebe Bridgers.

Sprague moves from folk to rock with considerable command. The familiarity of the harmonic choices and a fairly contemporary sound make everything pleasant and memorable enough, with a not-so-remote chance of stumbling upon at least a couple of songs worth holding onto.

“Maybe I Will See You At The End Of The World” is a potentially vintage album, where the reference era is not so far away. But don't worry: I don't in any way foresee a revival of the pop-rock that defined the shift from the 90s into the new millennium.

Undoubtedly, the spirited folk-rock of “I Refuse To Die” is a potential lost hit single for the charts of the early 2000s. At the same time, it sets some of the coordinates of a record that makes the art of pop-rock songwriting a pleasant dogma (“Steve”, “What U Want”), skillfully propped up by insights that leave a mark (the excellent “Staircase Failure”) and by softer detours that remain anchored to mature, agile writing (“You Have To Stop”, “Quitter”), until reaching a narrative coherence that finds its right lyrical and sonic resolution in “End Of The World”.

Sober, mature and solid, Sydney Sprague's debut reveals a talent with considerable future potential; with a bit of daring and a bit of luck, the American singer-songwriter could aspire to a prominent place in the pop-rock firmament.
