It's partly the now unshakeable fixity of the duo's music that makes this new record, however stylistically compelling for the restraint of its arrangements and its subtle, well-aimed production, one of the less convincing entries in an otherwise outstanding second (third?) act of Innocence Mission's career.
If, on the level of arrangements, we're indeed looking at one of the duo's most accomplished and fully realized albums ("I Would Be There", the accordions of "Stars That Fall Away From Us"), on the level of songwriting there are, in truth, no tracks that stand out within their discography, and, were it not for Karen's voice, there would be little emotional departure from the record's "average" mood either.
Even so, this is a record that adds to the band's catalogue rather than diminishing it, and one that hints at a path in which the move to Bella Union is not merely a "lifetime achievement" gesture, but also a renewal of ambition, why not, while awaiting the real recognition - that of the public - which may not be long in coming.
