Before Covid-19 upended so many aspects of our daily lives, one of the last gigs seen in Rome, specifically at the Klang, was precisely that of submeet from Mantua, fresh off the release of their debut album "Terminal". A sonically heavy and powerful work, where post-punk takes on the noisiest forms of Daughters' industrial, and shoegaze is padded out with hazy, impenetrable layers of noise.
Live, the trio made up of Zannunzio on bass and vocals, Andrea Guardabascio on guitars and vocals, and Jacopo Rossi on drums and vocals lived up to expectations, delivering a performance that the walls of the Roman venue could barely contain. Hoping to get back on stage soon, submeet are killing time with the EP "Nosedive Session", whose cover art is in perfect continuity with the "airport" aesthetic of "Terminal". A proto-live studio session recorded on July 27, 2020 at La Buca Recording Studio in Montichiari, where the trio runs through four tracks: "Terminal", "Capsule Hotel", "Boelcke" and "White Arms". Just a quarter of an hour that won't ease the absence of live shows, but it's worth it as a taster to get a sense of the band's explosive energy, well captured in this fast, noisy session.
On the band's YouTube channel you can watch the video footage of the "Nosedive Session" in the group's trademark minimal black and white, courtesy of Ilenia Arangiaro and Annalisa Iembo. As the annus horribilis of 2020 draws to a close, submeet nonetheless leave behind a fine debut and an all-too-brief glimpse of their live dimension. Here's hoping for a future where all the missed shows can be made up for.
