Funerale Classico Italiano is the death industrial project of Giovanni Maffeis, an Italian artist currently collaborating with Brighter Death Now on stage. If you love the classic extreme style of artists like Atrax Morgue, you can only appreciate "/e·ṣi·zià·le/", his latest release on tape for SoundScape 713, the label run by Francesco Perizzolo (Satanismo Calibro 9). Maffeis, while looking to the tradition of a certain Italian underground sound, manages to stage a mature and personal style.

Across the two tracks that make up the work, the Milan-based artist balances vocal samples, drones and assorted noises into a well-crafted and effective horror mix. "Nei tuoi occhi innocenti" opens with the harrowing screams of a woman, progressively enveloped by blasts of pure industrial death, somewhere between Atrax Morgue and the best Brighter Death Now of the Nineties. Maffeis's distorted voice repeating the line "ho visto la morte nei tuoi occhi innocenti" like a mantra creates the right climax for a macabre sound inspired by true crime stories that have enjoyed great fortune in a certain perverse Italian imagination, from cinema to popular culture.

"Over", the second track on the work, twists the knife in the wound, between abrasive noise and death drives, once again placing itself in the funereal furrow of the Italian power electronics tradition (Cronaca Nera, early Macelleria Mobile di Mezzanotte, etc.).

"/e·ṣi·zià·le/" is a short work. It is the first release by the Funerale Classico Italiano project, apart from its participation in a couple of tape compilations ("Cronache della fine e dell'incubo", released in 2018, and another collection with Deison, Bernocchi and Geert Kohler, made in December 2019), but it hints at interesting possible future developments. A work warmly recommended to all true and die-hard fans of the genre.
