THE NEW YEAR - Snow

Nove anni, e i fratelli Kadane sembrano essere tornati indietro nel tempo, quando i Bedhead esaurivano la loro travolgente tripletta slow-rock e rimaneva da pensare a cosa fare di un paio di braccia che sapevano soprattutto tenere in mano uno strumento. “Snow” è forse il disco che molti loro fan avrebbero voluto come prima uscita del loro nuovo progetto musicale, The New Year: intelligente, ricercato, probabilmente anche più rispettoso dell’estetica nineties rispetto all’adolescenza recalcitrante delle tentazioni indie-rock dei primi dischi del progetto (quelli veri).

Proud piano flourishes, arranged like a jazzy accompaniment to an open-mic poetry night ("The Last Fall"), guitar lines steeped in bittersweet nostalgia ("Homebody", "Mayday"): especially in the first half of the record, a reunion unfolds that will surely raise goosebumps on fans' arms, in what turns out, a bit too quickly, to be a nostalgia lever that's perhaps a touch too easy to pull.

Too little daring and too much craftsmanship are the real weaknesses of an album that is, in truth, far from unworthy, one that genuinely seems to bring an era back to life, with the insistent, mumbling-yet-crystalline resonance of "Recent History", and with the existential quiet-loud dynamics of "The Beast".

Inevitabilmente didascalico, “Snow” gode comunque di un’esecuzione dal trasporto sincero e del talento compositivo dei Kadane, che trasporta i Bedhead in un chamber-rock cantautorale ai confini con l’alt-country (soprattutto nella title track, il brano migliore del disco) che è forse la destinazione naturale e auspicabile di questa seconda carriera del duo.
