LARIX - LARiX

2017 (Pseudomagica)
free improvisation, noise

It's no coincidence that this asphalt-colored larch sprouted in the Roman undergrowth, where in recent years the most sinister specters of occult psychedelia under the Boring Machines banner have been lurking. It was here, in 2015, that producer Antøniø Serra conceived the LARiX trio project, now christened with his new label Pseudomagica.

The fearless impro outfit features Giacomo Ancillotto (a versatile guitarist operating at the outer limits of jazz), Franz Rosati (electronic composer and digital artist) and Emanuele Tomasi (NoHayBanda! – both as a duo and a trio – and other born troublemakers). And what becomes clear from the very first moments, like an alarm demanding our immediate attention, is that LARiX is a strike force: the five movements of this debut-manifesto carry the leaden sound of a strategic phase and the thunderous march of a military advance by a delegation determined not to lower its guard for even a minute, helmet on head and knife between teeth.

Tomasi's drumming is gloriously excessive, seeming to multiply through the acoustic space with the same pervasiveness as Rosati's mutant synths and the samples piled up by Ancillotto. Post-industrial clamor and cold, Supersilent-like muscularity go hand in hand in this well-engineered dystopian-urban tour de force, where the tension stays steady even in the more atmospheric passages – no less ashen for it.

Finally, the mastering of the limited-edition white vinyl bears the prestigious signature of James Plotkin, meticulous sound engineer as well as guitarist and bassist for such deviant creatures as Khanate and Khlyst. The digital version comes with a bonus three-minute outtake.
