INSTITUTE - Subordination

2017 (Sacred Bones)
post-punk

Three years have passed since the Ep "Salt", Institute's first release for Sacred Bones. In the meantime, the band has put out a full-length - the solid "Catharsis". The reason to talk about the Texan group again comes with this new release, once more put out by the New York label, which shows the young (post)punk ensemble in excellent form.

The quartet launches its assault straight away with opener "Exhibitionism"; the production plays up the guitar's paroxysm ("Only Child", "All This Pride"), while the frontman gives free rein to his lucid madness. The line-up is rounded out by an effective rhythm section, "square" and uncompromising.

"Subordinate" flaunts a fierce, skillfully built framework: after all, it doesn't hurt to know how to play "well" when you want to hit hard, and on that front Institute confirm themselves as precocious bad teachers.

In the razor-sharp cuts of "Human Law" the influence of Rikk Agnew peeks through: a death-rock for the new millennium, and the finale also makes room for solid injections of detroit-sound ("Powerstation").

Institute – forgive the well-worn phrase – aren't inventing anything new, but there's little need for that: what drives their rock'n'roll is pure attitude, back-to-the-roots and markedly punk in intent.

Released in early June, "Subordination" is the quintessential album to play at high volume: the "summer record" for anyone looking for a dark, abrasive and pissed-off sound.
