GEODETIC - Cold Lights

2017 (Instruments of discipline)
dark-ambient, industrial, techno

While print magazines and webzines are still singing the praises of the debut by Geodetic, the project of Claudio Rocchetti and Jukka Reverberi, the pair have already released their own personal “The Return” with Berlin's Instruments Of Discipline: the EP “Cold Lights”, which reveals a sonic mutation process still in nuce, even though the track titles keep following the Roman numeral sequence from “Broken Consonance”.

And so, if on the debut we picked up traces of the unhealthy Dadaism of Cabaret Voltaire, in the dance abrasions of “VII” we instead taste again the flakes of that acid snowfall of '91 unleashed by Coil on “Love's Secret Domain”, whose effects reverberate through the synth-punk of “VIII”, shot through with recurring Middle Eastern hallucinations à-la Muslimgauze.

The industrial-techno collage underpinning the disturbing fabric of “IX” edges toward exasperation in the screeching sonic manipulations of the closing “X”, which pits the Clock Dva of “Buried Dreams” against the dark-ambient turn of Shackleton.

No doubt about it: the Rocchetti-Reverberi outfit knows how to have fun and make us have fun too, fishing the right names out of the cauldron of their musical culture and treating us to superb, authorial reworkings of glories now gone (or going), all striving, one way or another, to reinvent themselves.
