GREAT SAUNITES - Green

2016 (Hypershape)
psych-rock

The Great Saunites, with Atros's (Marcello Agroppi) distorted bass and Leonard Layola's (Angelo Bignamini) tireless drumming, deliver a quick follow-up to “Nero” (2016) with “Green”.

The twenty-five minutes of “Dhaneb” amount to an incredibly static space-rock workout, nothing close to the masters Hawkwind. The only remotely more engaging section is a tracked-paced variation with the bass howling feedback, though it barely departs from a muddled psychedelic routine: after more than ten minutes of build-up, the track's mood never changes; it fades into a lysergic wasteland before picking back up at the original tempo.

The fury of “Antares” (twenty-one minutes), more brasileiro than cosmic, has perhaps a sharper sprint and frenzy. After four minutes, though, it already seems to have run out of fuel, like a “Interstellar Overdrive” by Pink Floyd that halts its own disintegration, left hanging between improvisation and a dazed repetition of the theme.

Second chapter of a “chromatic” trilogy, recorded and released the same year as its predecessor. The intentions are most noble, just two extended tracks, which however could be boiled down to - perhaps - two ideas per track, chewed over and over. They aim for trance, and partly achieve it, because what erupts is sensationalism and exhibitionism. A notable physical effort, that much is true, more than a musical one. The (ghost) vocals on “Dhaneb” are by Mike B of Viscera. Limited edition with “visual layouts” by Giorgio Salmoiraghi. Co-produced with Toten Schwan.
