DELIRIUM - L’era della menzogna

The fifth album by Delirium, the Genoese outfit that gave Ivano Fossati his start, and the second from the band's new incarnation (inaugurated by a warm-up "Live" in 2007), featuring yet another lineup change: alongside longtime members Ettore Vigo and Martin Grice and new bassist Fabio Chighini are Alessandro Corvaglia (vocals, already of Maschera Di Cera), Michele Cusato (guitar) and Alfredo Vandresi (drums).

Technically and stylistically, "L'era della menzogna" somewhat strengthens the languor of its predecessor "Il nome del vento" (2009). But only in fits and starts. In the 11 minutes of "Il castello del Mago Merlino" there's a bit of substance only in a brief sax jam; more jazz-rock, albeit coarse-grained, can be heard in a few moments of "Il nodo". "L'inganno del potere" boasts an AOR-style opening, with sound effects and solos (keyboards and flute) and rather simplistic riffs, just as the title track opens by alternating a sparkling burst of energy with a spoken passage.

That's about all that can get a pass, along with two numbers that fall back once again on Fossati, a would-be folk-prog hit like "Fuorilegge" (reminiscent of the Pfm-era De André) and a Mediterranean instrumental like "La deriva", from this elderly, self-indulgent outing, also laden with social conscience (read: verbosity) and superfluous electronic backing. Performed live at Prog Sud in Marseille, preceded by the celebratory DVD "Il viaggio continua" and by the new live album "One Night In Genoa".
