G.B.HUSBAND AND THE UNGRATEFUL SONS - Full Of Love

Angelo Di Falco's voice is uncannily similar to that of the late Andrew Wood, frontman of the seminal Mother Love Bone. To properly frame the debut of G.B. Husband And The Ungrateful Sons, one has to start right from that era: from Mark Lanegan's first solo records, from the blues of Mad Season, from the gentle psychedelia of Grant Lee Buffalo, from the sensual soul of Afghan Whigs, and from the tex-mex folk of Giant Sand/OP8/Calexico.

The G.B. Husband And The Ungrateful Sons project was born in Avellino from the meeting of two bands with more than ten years of career behind them: Funny Dunny and Tom Bosley. Decidedly less booming than what was heard in their previous projects, the sound of G.B. Husband And The Ungrateful Sons draws on the best folk tradition of the '60s and '70s, revisited through a sensibility firmly rooted in '90s pop-rock.

The album's opening track, the title song "Full Of Love", makes it immediately clear where the hearts of the seven members of GBH&TUS truly lie, with an arpeggio strongly reminiscent of an old classic by metal-pop band Extreme.

Then "Quietness" kicks in, and it feels like listening to John Convertino and Joey Burns roaming the prairies somewhere between the Via Appia and the American West. "Lullaby" carries the ghost of the softer side of Tindersticks, the ones from the soul turn of "Simple Pleasure". The game of references ("Lonely Roads" pays tribute to the late John Martyn) doesn't diminish the scope of "Full Of Love", an intense record, well played and arranged, with a handful of songs able to lodge themselves instantly in your brain (chief among them "Magic Inside" and the moving "Weepin' (and Weepin')").
