MACHINEFABRIEK - Vignettes

2013 (Frattonove)
ambient

The tireless Rutger Zuydervelt, aka Machinefabriek, has also found time to collaborate with six-string virtuoso Sergio Sorrentino, who, besides being one of the youngest and most acclaimed Italian concert guitarists, already boasts a solid discography (Rai Trade, Vdm Records, Silta Records, Carish, Curci, Sinfonica, Aton Records, Setola di Maiale).

The guitarist from Vercelli recorded a dozen brief experiments, or "vignettes," in his hometown, aimed at showcasing the acoustic qualities of an electric guitar (played for the most part without effects). Although the clarity of the sounds might suggest otherwise, with the exception of the first short track on the album ("Prefazione / Introductie"), where you can hear the sound of an acoustic guitar, the other twelve were all played on an electric guitar.

The sounds were then chopped up and reassembled in Rotterdam, in Machinefabriek's studio, where they were turned into little ambient-noise symphonies. What's striking is the synergy between the two musicians and the willingness of an academically trained player like Sorrentino to let his ideas be manipulated, making them accessible even to a less cultured and less prepared audience than the one found in rock.
